Treatment Adherence Program

The Treatment Adherence Program at SAN helps clients adhere to their HIV medications and monitors their nutritional intake to reduce medication side effects and improve health. Clients receive individualized assistance by a registered dietitian free of charge. They address medication side effects, scheduling complications, and adherence devices such as pillboxes and timers.

Nutritional counseling includes an assessment of the client's food likes and dislikes, food accessibility, with follow-up education and support. SAN's dietitian will recommend and dispense vitamin, mineral and protein supplements as needed. Clients experiencing elevated levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in their blood may be able to reduce those levels through dietary changes.

Body composition testing is another component of the Treatment Adherence Program. Bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) is a quick and painless way to measure and track changes in the amounts of body fluids, fat, and lean muscle mass to help prevent wasting. Clients are given immediate results, and can discuss strategies for improvement as needed; There is no charge for this service.
